University of Mary Washington:  Moments in Time

Lynda Richardson Lynda Richardson '81, who has traveled the globe with her camera, agreed to turn her award-winning photographic eye toward her alma mater. For a year, she chronicled the campus and captured stunning images of its buildings, its people, and its culture. For nearly 20 years, Virginia-based wildlife and environmental photojournalist Lynda Richardson has been known for the "beyond the call of duty" effort she puts into each assignment, and an ability to capture subjects by combining unique perspectives with unusual techniques.

Richardson was included as one of the top female outdoor photographers in Nature Best Magazine and continues to prove herself on national assignments for Smithsonian, National Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy, and many others nationally, as well as internationally. Some of her corporate wildlife work includes companies such as Vulcan Materials Co., BP Amoco, and Browning-Ferris Industries. Her stock images have been sold to magazines, advertisers, and photo buyers all over the world.

Richardson also is known for her entertaining photography workshops and themed slide shows given to prestigious organizations including the Explorer’s Club in New York. She has received numerous awards in competitions such as Pictures of The Year (POY), and most recently, in the 2003 Nature’s Best International Photography Competition. Lynda also was recently accepted to participate in the prestigious “Pro-Tour of Nature Photography” Competition, a month-long competition that is limited to 20 photographers from all over the world.

University of Mary Washington:  A Centennial History

William CrawleyWilliam Crawley, Distinguished Professor of History and UMW Historian, earned his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. His primary teaching fields are recent American history and history of the South. He is the author of Bill Tuck: A Political Life in Harry Byrd’s Virginia. In 1994 he received the College’s annual Grellet C. Simpson Award for outstanding teaching, and in 2005 the graduating seniors chose him for the Mary W. Pinschmidt Award as the professor who had the greatest impact on students' lives. He currently serves as Historian of the University, and his book on that subject, to be published in October 2008, will follow Mary Washington through its first 100 years.
