Community Art Show: One Hundred Years Together

CALL FOR ENTRIES

The University of Mary Washington is celebrating 100 years in the Fredericksburg community during the 2007-08 academic year. In recognition of its centennial, the institution invites artists from the Fredericksburg area and surrounding counties to submit artwork for a juried exhibition titled, “One Hundred Years Together.”

The deadline for entries is Thursday, November 1. Artwork submitted for judging should reflect the shared experiences that the Fredericksburg region and the University have had over the past 100 years.

Following is the prospectus and entry form.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS TOGETHER

In celebrating the centennial of the University of Mary Washington, this exhibit opportunity is for artists in the areas of Fredericksburg and surrounding counties to submit art works that reflect the time, place, changes, traditions, departures, and discoveries of our shared experiences. Because the art community is extensive, it is fitting to demonstrate the rich variety of ideas, genre, media, and messages that characterizes our region and the university that serves it.

Johnson Bowles, director of the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts, will serve as juror. Bowles has served as director of the Longwood Center since 2000. She has worked in the museum field for 23 years and in the last 10 years has organized over 125 exhibitions. She has written numerous catalog essays on topics ranging from contemporary art to 19th-century, African, and Chinese art. Her critical writing on contemporary art has been published in national publications including Afterimage, Fiberarts, and Surface Design Journal. Bowles holds an MFA in photography and painting from Ohio University and a BFA from Boston University.
