Projects of the Centennial
Commissioned Music
The Department of Music chose to mark the centennial through a series of concerts that feature the premieres of commissioned works. On February 15, the Centennial Chamber Music Concert presented compositions written by UMW faculty and alumni, featuring "Portraits of Caroline Street" by Christopher Hogan '03, "Normal, for Alto Sax, Electronics, and Video" by Mark Snyder '97, and "our voices, for now, sustained" by associate professor of music Craig Thomas Naylor based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning poetry of Claudia Emerson, Arrington distinguished chair in poetry and professor of English. At the Reunion Concert on Sunday, February 17, Lecturer of Music Doug Gately's "A Centennial Celebration for Jazz Ensemble" was performed.
The UMW-Community Symphony Orchestra performed nationally celebrated composer James Grant's "Quest, A Symphony of Celebration" and UMW Professor of Music and Composer-in-Residence David J. Long's "LXXV + XXV" on March 15. Additionally, UMW students Jeremy Vaughn and Jeffrey Zeiders created a new arrangement of the Alma Mater.
On Friday, April 4, the UMW Wind and Percussion Ensemble performed "Symphony No. 3, The Centennial!" by Craig T. Naylor and "Their Finest Hour" by David J. Long. Finally, on Sunday, April 20, the Fredericksubrg Singers presented "Psalm 67" by David Kidwell '87.

Digital Archive
To preserve UMW history for the future, a group of faculty and staff have combined resources to scan hundreds of historic photographs for University archives. These treasures will be accessible to anyone seeking UMW photographs for future publications. View the photographs at archive.umw.edu.
University Mace
A new University mace for formal occasions, including academic processions at Founders Day, Commencement, and inaugurations, has been commissioned from Susannah Wagner, a registered British Goldsmith in Ashland, Va. The sterling mace includes symbols of UMW traditions.
