The Language of Giving

Bequests: Gifts arranged through a Will and designated to the University of Mary Washington.

Capital Campaign: An organized effort with a specific dollar goal and finite timeline to raise substantial funds for UMW building projects, endowment funds, and other longrange needs.

Case Statement: A written compilation of compelling needs to support the University’s appeal for private funds.

Constituents: Members of various donor groups within the UMW community (alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty/staff, corporations, foundations, and friends).

Deferred Giving/Gift Planning: A structured program that allows donors to make arrangements now for a future gift to UMW.

Endowment: A permanent fund from which only earned/growth income is spent. The University of Mary Washington endowments are invested under the leadership of the Foundation Board of Directors.

Fiscal Year: For gift planning and acknowledgement purposes, the UMW Foundation’s accounting year is July 1 to June 30.

Life Income Gift: A charitable contribution to the UMW Foundation through which the donor receives income for life and significant tax savings.

Multi-year pledge: A signed commitment to make a gift to UMW throughout a specified period of time (usually three to five years) payable according to terms specified by the donor.

Restricted gift: A gift to UMW made by a donor and designated for a specific purposeand/or program.

Unrestricted gift: An unconditional gift to the Fund for Mary Washington that can be used to support areas of greatest need.
