Campaign Priorities
Centennial Campaign Goals
Campaign Total - $75 MILLION
* Endowment — $35 Million
A priority of the Centennial Campaign is the creation of new endowments and the continued growth of current endowments. An endowed gift is one in which the principal is never expended. The gift exists into perpetuity and keeps giving generation after generation. Endowments are, by far, the most effective means of long-range support of Mary Washington.
To establish an endowed fund with the University of Mary Washington Foundation, guidelines specify a minimum investment of $20,000. Once an endowment is established and approved, additional contributions can be added to enhance the fund’s value. In addition, several programs and special scholarships can be endowed at the minimum levels as noted below:
Endowed Faculty Chairs: $1 million
Alvey Scholarships: $500,000
Endowed Professorships: $300,000
Washington Scholarships: $250,000
Faculty Summer Research Fellowships: $200,000
Named Merit or Need-Based Scholarships: $20,000 (minimum)
The above list is a sampling of endowments that can be funded at the University. The staff from the Office of University Advancement is available to discuss other opportunities for your consideration.
Capital Projects — $25 Million
Through a program of steady and focused renovation and construction, the University has worked hard to maintain the architecture and beauty of both campuses.
In order to make the Mary Washington experience even more interesting and exciting to potential and current students, a goal of the Centennial Campaign is to secure private funds to construct, renovate, and refurbish current academic facilities and housing. These projects are important to enhance the “living and learning” experience for our students.
Since the beginning of the Centennial Campaign, the University has benefited from the construction of key facilities financed largely with private gifts.

The Carmen Culpeper Chappell ’59 Centennial Campanile - Funded/Dedicated in 2007
* Fund for Mary Washington — $15 Million
Each year, unrestricted gifts from alumni, parents, past parents, grandparents, friends, corporations, faculty, and staff support the Fund for Mary Washington. This annual support is crucial to fund the day-to-day operational needs of the University, including residential facilities, student and faculty enrichment programs, and student activities.
Cultural Enrichments
An overarching goal of the Centennial Campaign is to provide for programs to enhance the full Mary Washington experience. Gifts to support the UMW-Community Symphony Orchestra, the UMW Galleries, the James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library, and Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont offer opportunities for the entire Mary Washington community.
Naming Opportunities
A gift to the Centennial Campaign is a perfect way to honor or memorialize a family member, a friend, or a favorite professor. The Office of University Advancement can provide you with a complete listing of naming opportunities for your endowed gift, including scholarships, classrooms, professorships, and buildings. A named endowment will become a permanent part of Mary Washington’s history.
