Transfer Credit

Students admitted to degree programs at the UMW may use courses taken at other college and universities to meet the CGPS degree requirements by obtaining prior approval from the appropriate Assistant Dean of Advising or the Associate Dean of Advising.

All transfer courses should be APPROVED IN ADVANCE in order to receive transfer credit. You can download the Transfer Credit Permission form from the frequently used forms link on the Advising Services web page. Courses to be counted in the major program must also be PRE-APPROVED by the student's faculty advisor, who will help the student select coursework related to major requirements at UMW.

After the Office of Advising Services has pre-approved transfer credit, the credit will only be applied to a UMW degree when the UMW Office of the Registrar receives an official transcript of that coursework by the University's final deadline.

Students should consult the Office of Advising Services for specific information about transfer credit deadlines. Remember that CLEP, ACE, and PORTFOLIO credit is considered transfer credit.

Please refer to the current Transfer Credit Guide for courses offered at area community colleges that can satisfy the General Education requriements.

Graduate students may elect to take a CLEP test to waive select foundation course. Click here for a listing of eligible CLEP tests.
