Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) Information

The Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) is effective August 1, 2009. We are working closely with the VA to ensure a smooth implementation of this new benefit chapter. Please check back here for more information about using Chapter 33 at CGPS. This is what we know so far:

  • The VA began accepting applications for Chapter 33 on May 1, 2009.
  • To begin using Chapter 33 benefits at CGPS, the veteran must submit a Chapter 33 Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to the Veterans Affairs Liaison. The COEs will be sent out by the VA directly to the veteran.
  • If you have applied for Chapter 33 benefits but have not yet received your COE, please contact Danielle Davis for information on how to have your enrollment certified.
  • The VA tuition cap for the 2009-2010 school year is $326 per credit and up to $3,840 in fees per term.
  • The VA will send UMW a check for the amount of tuition of fees reported. If a course is dropped after this payment has been issued, UMW will issue a refund check to the veteran. IT IS THE VETERAN'S RESPONSIBILITY TO REIMBURSE THIS AMOUNT BACK TO THE VA. The VA will be notified and they will contact the veteran regarding this overpayment.
  • If you are less than 100% eligible for Chapter 33 Post 9/11 benefits, you will have a balance on your account. This balance must be paid to avoid late fees and holds on your account.
  • Housing allowances and book and supply stipends will be paid directly to the veteran. Housing allowance will be paid directly to the veteran on a monthly basis, and the book stipend will be paid directly to the veteran at the beginning of the semester.
  • The VA uses "22401" as the zip code of record to determine BAH rates.
  • The best source for current information regarding Chapter 33 is www.gibill.va.gov.
