Media Enhanced Instruction for Learning --------------------------------REGISTRATION CLOSED

Instructional media kits with examples of media-enhanced instruction for learning are discussed and demonstrated as a way of delivering information that addresses multiple learning styles.  Highlights of the session include designing and using embedded media to assist readers with learning and comprehension.  Participants create documents with pedagogical agents used for coaching readers on instructional topics.  Interactive documents designed by UMW students are used to illustrate key concepts.

Thinking Outside the Book:  Literature Across the Curriculum ------REGISTRATION CLOSED

Children’s literature can help students develop the necessary depth and breadth for meaningful connections in content areas.  In this course, the integration of literacy in the content areas is explored as a springboard for lessons, read alouds, and book lists in teaching mathematics, social studies, and science.

Teaching for IMPACT

In this course, participants become familiar with the Teaching for IMPACT model for integrating backward curriculum design and differentiated instruction to plan effective units of study. Students learn to use a teacher-friendly template to develop a unit; synthesize learning by reviewing a flowchart of the model; have an opportunity to deepen their understandings about curriculum, assessment, and instruction; and reflect on their own practice.

The Three B’s: Bullied, Bully, and Bystander
CRN 12761 ----- EDUC 096MC S1 ----- 1 Credit

This course examines the nature, prevalence, and impact of bullying both at the individual and school level. The differences between how boys and girls bully are discussed along with the role that bullying plays in the development of violence in school. Practical strategies for intervention and prevention at the individual, classroom, and school levels are shared along with assessment tools and nationally-recognized bully-proofing programs.

Managing the Classroom Environment

Environmental Ethics

This course is an introduction to core ideas in environmental ethics. It seeks to provide teachers with some of the tools useful for understanding arguments on both sides of debates regarding, for example, preservation vs. conservation, and concepts of the human relationship with the natural world.

Reflective Activities for the Classroom

In this course, participants use technology to support reflection in the classroom. Participants interact with free and low-cost computer programs and websites that promote critical thinking in reading activities with simulation software. Alternatives are offered for those without classroom technology.

Sophocles’ Oedipus the King: Ancient and Modern Productions of a Greek Tragedy
CRN 12766 ----- EDUC 01SMC S1 ------ 1 Credit

This course examines the core human issues presented in one Greek tragedy, Sophocles’ Oedipus the King, how the play might have resonated with a classical Athenian audience, why it still resonates with a modern audience, and how it has been produced and reproduced in classical and modern theaters.
