Islam and the West

This is a survey of the encounter between Islam and the West and will include a discussion on Islam, Middle Eastern culture, politics and history.

Every Student Has a Story

CRN 82126         EDUC 03A-MC-S1                             1 Credit

The workshop will offer strategies and materials to encourage elementary school students to share their life stores, integrating writing and reading, while using multicultural literature and social studies activities.  Strategies to be explored during the session include sharing self-discovery stories, sharing stories through oral history, and telling stories through photography.  Participants will be provided a handout of information including a bibliography of multicultural literature and a packet of project materials.

Using Drama in the Everyday Classroom

Learn how to create a dramatic framework for teaching anything in the curriculum.  This course will explore how to structure drama activities that help students construct a deeper understanding of subject matter.  It's social and fun and great for classroom management and discipline.  This course will focus on process drama and improvisation.

Literacy in the Secondary Classroom

Developing Personal/Social Skills to Improve Outcomes for Elementary Students with Disabilities

CRN 82129       EDUC 098-MC-S1                        1 Credit

This course discusses the personal/social needs of elementary students with disabilities across the lifespan.  A variety of elementary approaches are reviewed and collaborative opportunities to practice implementing several methods are provided.  Students will work in groups to identify common social skills/sensory difficulties, break down social skill tasks and participate in simulations.

Writing Strategies for English Language Learners

Writing is one of the last skills to develop for English language learners.  This course will look at the problems with writing that they bring to the classroom, explore teachers' perceptions of this special student writing and provide teachers with materials and strategies for assisting ELL students achieve success with writing assignments.  This class will also look at the current writing SOLs and how they align with WIDA standards.
