TESL 532: Differentiated Instruction for English Language Learners Across the Curriculum

It is with pleasure the University of Mary Washington in association with the Virginia Department of Education offers TESL 532: Differentiated Instruction for English Language Learners Across the Curriculum for the spring of 2009. This page will give you the particulars about the course and the registration process. We look forward helping you gain techniques and strategies for working with the increasingly diverse classrooms in the state of Virginia.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will provide an introducation to effective strategies for differentiating instruction for English language learners (ELLs) in the mainstream classroom at all grade levels. It will also provide an examination of the effects of policy and practice on students from culturally and liguistically diverse backgrounds. Among the topics addressed are: recent research on cultural and cognitive learning style, socio-cultural contexts of teaching and learning, current research on differentiated instruction for reading, writing and language acquisition across the cirriculum, and socio-cultural influences on subject-specific learning. This course will also review performance based classroom assessment and compare it to standards-based assessment and examine the implications that standards-based teaching has on the classroom and school environment for ELLs.

* All classes will begin at 9 am and end at 4 pm. Further information will be available on the syllabus that will be posted on January 7, 2009. It is important to have Internet access to complete the requirements for this course.

Tuition and Books: All tuition for the three-credit class and books are covered by a grant from the Virginia Department of Education. Book will be distributed the first day of class.

Course credit: Participants will be registered in section TESL 532-01 or TESL 532-02 at the University of Mary Washington. This is a graduate-level, three-semester-credit course that awards letter grades (A, B, C). In order to receive a passing grade (A or B), participants must attend all classes and complete all course requirements. The course must be taken for credit.

Applicability of course for VA licensure in ESL, re-certification and/or masters degree: The course may be acceptable for VA licensure and/or masters credit. For a determination on VA licensure or re-certification, please contact the VA Dept of Education’s Division on Teacher Education and Licensure.

Students who wish to count this course toward a master's degree are asked to contact personnel at the institution in which they are enrolled.

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS CRITICAL TO YOUR ENROLLMENT IN THE CLASS: Enrollment in this class is on a first-come first served basis. Please be certain that you are able to attend class on the dates the class is held. You must attend all class sessions in order to receive credit for the course.

Registration: In order for you to be registered for the course you need to first be enrolled at the University of Mary Washington. The following forms are included on this website. Please complete ALL forms and email them back to Patricia Reynolds (preynold@umw.edu) or fax them to 540-286-8045 (Attention: Patricia Reynolds).If you are unable to download/print the forms, please contact the grant coordinator, preynold@umw.edu or 540.286.8093.

Application for Non-Degree Student Status (pdf)–This form will ask for your home and school information, as well as other required data to enroll you in UMW. Once completed and enrolled, you'll receive a Student ID Number, which you can then use to access your grades and request a transcript. You will also receive a log on for Blackboard.

Application for Virginia In-State Tuition Rates (pdf)–Even though you are probably all VA residents, you must still apply for in-state tuition rates (to be paid by the VA DOE). Most of you will only need to complete Section A of the attached form.
