The Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies (DTLT) assists the University of Mary Washington in maintaining its commitment to academic excellence by supporting the instructional technology needs of the entire UMW community through instructional design and support, consulting, and other services. Our staff comprises full-time, part-time, and student aide positions.

DTLT Responsibilities

  • Instructional Design: We help faculty imagine, design, build, and deliver innovative and effective instruction through the integration of information technology into their pedagogical practice.
  • Online Learning Environment Support: We assist faculty with designing, developing, and using innovative online learning environments to facilitate collaboration and connection-building for teaching and learning. We also consult with faculty on the pedagogical use of Blackboard, and we provide input regarding the management of the Blackboard server.
  • Consulting and Other Services: We provide consulting and other services in support of the instructional mission of the university.
  • Research and Development: We are constantly engaged in learning more about emerging and innovative technologies and their applicability to teaching and learning. Our research in these areas serves to inform and augment the work we do in service to UMW faculty and students.

DTLT-Sponsored Events

  • Faculty Academy on Instructional Technologies is an annual conference that showcases and highlights the many innovative and creative ways UMW faculty are incorporating instructional technologies into their pedagogy.
  • Student Academy on Information Technologies is an annual showcase for student course projects that use information technology.

Our division is led by Jerry Slezak, acting director. The division reports to Nina Mikhalevsky, Acting Provost and Vice President for Strategy and Policy.

We invite you to contact us for if you have a particular project in mind or if you'd just like to learn more about the ways technology can augment your own teaching practices.
