Eaglelink FAQs

What is Eaglelink?

Eaglelink is the University portal which is based on Luminis portal technology and is integrated with Banner Self-Service.

WHAT IS A PORTAL?

A Portal gathers useful information and functions from a variety of web resources into a ‘one stop’ Web page to help users avoid having to hunt for information. A portal will allow users of different interests to customize their information sources to personalize their Portal web page.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EAGLELINK AND THE UNIVERSITY WEB SITE?

The University of Mary Washington web site is in the public domain. Anyone can read anything that is posted on UMW web pages. It is the university's public face to the outside world. The Eaglelink portal is private and available only to UMW constituents: students faculty and staff. In order to access information in Eaglelink a user must authenticate using valid credentials: NetID and password.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER IMPORTANT DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN A WEB SITE AND THE EAGLELINK PORTAL?

In a normal web site, the information is available, but it is up to the visitor to find it. Visitors either have to use a search engine or navigate through the links on the web pages. Often, people miss out on information because they can't find it. In the portal, the user is identified by the system as a result of the user's login credentials. The portal then uses the detailed knowledge the University has about the person to gather together information relevant to him or her and displays it in one place.

WHY SHOULD I USE EAGLELINK?

Students can use Eaglelink to prepare for campus life and classes. In Eaglelink, students can view and print the course schedule, get financial aid information, access Blackboard, find an instructor's contact information, check grades, view a degree audits, and stay informed about events.

Faculty can also use Eaglelink to prepare for the term, from home or campus. Faculty will find course rosters, access to advising holds, student email addresses and information from key offices, such as the provost's office, their college or department.

Staff can use Eaglelink to stay abreast of campus news and events, to communicate with students, faculty and one another, and to access employee services.

DO I NEED ANOTHER PASSWORD FOR EAGLELINK?

No. Eaglelink uses your UMW NetID and Password . Your Eaglelink password is updated to your new network password when you change your network password.

Where do I go to get to Eaglelink?

Go to "http://eaglelink.umw.edu." Or, for your convenience, you will find a link to "Eaglelink" on the top of every web page on the UMW site. It looks like this:

How does Eaglelink get me to Banner Self-Service?

Very easily. From the home tab in the portal, there is a channel called "Banner Self-Service." It has all the familiar Banner Self-Service links, and they take you to all your favorite Banner-Self-Service pages.

I'M NEW TO EAGLELINK, WHAT IS BANNER SELF-SERVICE?

Banner Self-Service is your access to your pertinent University Of Mary Washington data. Banner Self-Service allows students to access their grades, transcripts and so much more.

Can I login to all systems with a single login to Eaglelink?

No. Due to technical barriers, Blackboard will continue to be a separate login; for convenience, an icon will be provided from Eaglelink to Blackboard and other applications

WHY DO I HAVE A DIFFERENT SET OF "TABS" THAN MY FRIEND, OFFICE MATE OR COLLEAGUE?

The tabs and channels in your Eaglelink Portal depend upon your "role" at UMW: Incoming (New) Student at the College of Arts and Sciences campus, Returning Student at the College of Arts and Sciences campus, Student at the College of Graduate and Professional Studies campus, Faculty, Employee, FInance and/or Development Officer. It is possible for people to be both staff members and students, for instance, so that one staff member will have additional tabs and channels. In addition, users can customize their portal by adding tabs and channels to suit their own interests.

HAVEN'T I SEEN THE NAME "EAGLELINK" BEFORE?

Yes. If you’ve been around long enough, you may remember our first online registration system called “Eaglelink.” Call it nostalgia, but we thought this name, created by the students at the time, evokes a history of online innovation at the University Of Mary Washington.
