Establish a career Path

a. Use the information you have collected to make decisions and set goals. You can't expect to hit the jackpot if you don't put a few nickels in the machine. (Flip Wilson )

In this stage, you evaluate all the information you have collected about yourself and the available career options and make some conclusions. This typically includes charting a life plan that should include a personal mission statement, career goals, potential options, and strategies to accomplish your goals. You can chart your career progression through the Virginia Classified System in this stage. You may decide you need to invest in yourself by additional training or education, or choose to change the field you are in. Virginia employees are fortunate to have the opportunity to develop a professional development plan with their supervisor's support-this is where you put together that plan.

b. Create an action plan.

Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there. (Will Rogers )

This is the stage many people are tempted to jump to before having a concrete idea of what they are looking for. Based on what you have discovered in the earlier stages, you are now ready to establish a Career Action Plan. Typical actions include identifying open positions you qualify for, preparing your employment application or resume, brushing up on interviewing skills, and finally interviewing and negotiating for your next career position.

C. Manage your career.

Even a good process includes time to evaluate the action you have taken. Managing your career is no different. It's important to continuously take time to assess your progress and determine your satisfaction level. If you find that you have not achieved what you want, or what you have chosen is no longer satisfying, consider going through the entire process, or any part of the process, again.
