Chris Foss, Associate Professor of English, earned a Ph.D. (1995) in 19th-century British literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an M.A. (1988) in literature from Northeastern University, and a B.A. (1986) in English (with secondary education certification) and Spanish from Concordia College (Moorhead, Minn.).

Dr. Foss is the author of numerous scholarly articles and academic conference papers. His particular emphases within his specialty area include Toru Dutt, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Oscar Wilde. He also recently has developed a subspecialty in disability studies, with a particular emphasis on autism.

In a recent interview aired on the “With Good Reason” public radio show, Dr. Foss discusses his interest in how autism is portrayed in contemporary literature and film, and he says it’s time to rethink difference, dignity, discrimination and other disability issues.

    Chris Foss Presents at ConferenceFoss, Christofer09Chris Foss, professor of English, presented a paper entitled "The Aesthetics of Bharautism: The Articulation of Autistic Identity and Indianness in Raam, My Name Is Khan, and How Can I Talk If My Lips Don’t Move?" at the 43rd annual national meeting of the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association on Wednesday, March 27.  This year's conference, which featured more than 3,000 program participants, was held at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park.

    Chris Foss Presented PaperFoss, Christofer09Chris Foss, professor of English, presented a paper entitled "Engaging Eastern Enjoyment(s): Poetic Renderings of Hindu Festivals in Ghosh and Naidu" at the annual meeting of the Interdisciplinary Nineteenth Century Studies Association on Sunday, March 17.  This year's conference, hosted by the University of Virginia, was held in Charlottesville.

    Chris Foss Presents at ConferenceChris Foss, professor of English, organized a roundtable discussion on autism studies at the South Atlantic Modern Language Association Annual Convention in Raleigh/Durham, N.C., on Nov. 10. For this special extended session panel, Foss joined four prominent national voices in offering short presentations to introduce threads of discussion that initiated a two-hour conversation on topics such as the nexus of autism and aesthetics, the nexus of autism and neurocosmopolitanism, and the nexus of autism and rhetoric.
