Mindy J. Erchull, Associate Professor of Psychology, earned a Ph.D. (2005) and an M.A. (2002) in social psychology from Arizona State University, after receiving a B.A. (1998) in psychology from Connecticut College. Her research interests include objectification and sexualization of women, feminism and feminist identity, psychological aspects of reproductive health, and attitudes about menstruation. She also has broad training in social psychology, health psychology, psychology of women, women’s health, social influence, and statistics and research methods. In addition to research and academic training in these areas, Dr. Erchull serves as a consulting editor for Psychology of Women Quarterly and regularly reviews manuscripts for journals including Sex Roles, Health Care for Women International, and Basic and Applied Social Psychology.
She has presented her work at numerous conferences including meetings of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Association for Women in Psychology. She also has had articles published on her research interests in such academic journals as Psychology of Women Quarterly, Sex Roles, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, and Health Psychology, most recently “Feminism and Attachment Parenting: Attitudes, Stereotypes, and Misperceptions” in Sex Roles.
In 2011, Dr. Erchull was awarded the Psi Chi Southeastern Regional Faculty Advisor Award for her active involvement as the university’s Psi Chi chapter advisor. She also received the 2010 Mary Roth Walsh Teaching the Psychology of Women Award at the American Psychological Association Convention. The award, sponsored by the Society for the Psychology of Women, recognizes a young faculty member who employs innovative methods to address issues of diversity in teaching the psychology of women.
She was awarded a 2011-2012 Mary Washington Faculty Development Grant for the project “Objectification, Sexualization, and Sexual Agency.”
Dr. Erchull is co-chair of the Hyde Graduate Student Research Grants Committee for the Society for the Psychology of Women, serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research and is a faculty consultant for Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology. She also regularly reviews conference submissions for the Society for the Psychology of Women, the Association for Women in Psychology, and the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research. Her professional memberships include the American Psychological Association, Association for Psychological Science, Association for Women in Psychology, National Women’s Studies Association, Society for Menstrual Cycle Research, Society for Personality and Social Psychology, Virginia Academy of Academic Psychologists, and Virginia Psychological Association.
