Suzanne G. Houff, Professor of Education, earned a Ph.D. in urban services/curriculum and instruction cognate (1997) from Old Dominion University, an Ed.S. in administration and supervision (1990) from George Washington University, an M.Ed. in library and media (1980) from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a B.S. in elementary education (1976) from Longwood College.

Dr. Houff’s latest book is an essay collection that she edited, titled “The Classroom Facilitator: Special Issue Questions” (2010, Rowman & Littlefield). She previously wrote “The Classroom Manager: Procedures and Practices to Improve Instruction” (2009) and “The Classroom Researcher: Using Applied Research to Meet Student Needs” (2008), both published by Rowman & Littlefield. She has been a driving force behind the Ghana Education Project. As part of that UMW study-abroad program, Dr. Houff has led UMW education students to the west African country to train Ghanian teachers in reading instruction.

She can serve as a knowledgeable source about classroom management, the Ghana Education Project, curriculum, and literacy across the curriculum. Dr. Houff teaches graduate courses about such topics as language and literacy across the curriculum, teaching and development of the learner, curriculum development, classroom management and educational research.

Her articles about preparing teachers in the development of a positive classroom climate and about language arts workshops for students have been published in The Teacher Educators Journal, Teacher Librarian, and Virginia English Bulletin.
In 2010, Dr. Houff received the annual Outstanding Faculty Award for the Stafford campus. A past governing council member of the Virginia State Reading Association, she is past president of the association’s Virginia College Reading Educators Council. She also is a member of the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development and the Association of Teacher Educators in Virginia.
