James M. Harding

James Harding, Professor of English, earned a Ph.D. (1991) in comparative literature from the University of Maryland, an M.A. (1987) in comparative literature from San Diego State University, and a B.A. (1982) in German literature from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He specializes in modern and contemporary literature and culture, with a particular emphasis on theatre history and performance studies, and he has worked extensively on the theory and history of avant-garde performance.

Dr. Harding is a former editor of the journal Theatre Survey and is the author of Cutting Performances: Collage Events, Feminist Artists and the American Avant-Garde, and Adorno and a Writing of the Ruins: Essays on Anglo-American Literature and Culture. His other books include Not the Other Avant-Garde: On the Transnational Foundations of Avant-Garde Performance, Restaging the Sixties: Radical Theaters and their Legacies, and Contours of the Theatrical Avant-Garde: Performance and Textuality. He is now finishing a new monograph titled Decentering the Edge: Critical Theories of Avant-Garde Performance. His articles have appeared in Theatre Survey, Theatre Journal, Modern Drama, TDR, and PMLA, among other journals.
