Mark Safferstone, Executive Director of the UMW Dahlgren campus and UMW Professional Development Programs, earned a Ph.D. (1977) from Vanderbilt University, a MBA (2006) from the University of Mary Washington and a M.Ed. (1972) and B.Ed. (1970) from the University of Miami. His consulting and academic background makes him a knowledgeable source on organizational leadership, human resources, consulting, research methods and leadership development.
Dr. Safferstone has given numerous professional development and academic presentations, including at the Virginia chapter of the International Public Management Association for Human Resources and the Association for Continuing Higher Education Region 4 & 5 Joint Conference. Most recently, he gave the presentation, “A Campus Without Faculty: Creating a Distance Learning Hub” at the Society for College and University Planning 2011 Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference. Dr. Safferstone is a frequent contributor to Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries. He published a substantive bibliographic essay entitled Organizational Leadership: Classic Works and Contemporary Perspectives that highlighted the 100 seminal leadership books. Additionally, Dr. Safferstone has been a consultant to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s Federal Executive Institute since 1989 and has consulted with and conducted an array of leadership development workshops for federal and state agencies as well as private sector organizations.
Dr. Safferstone is a member of the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, Military Affairs Council Board of Directors and the Quantico/Belvoir Regional Business Alliance Board of Directors.
