Melanie Szulczewki, Assistant Professor of Earth and Environmental Studies, earned both a Ph.D. (1999) and a M.S. (1996) in soil science from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a B.A. (1993) in chemistry and French literature from Cornell University.

In 2009, Dr. Szulczewski published the essay “One Professor in a Classroom” in the anthology Thoreau’s Legacy: American Stories about Global Warming, a joint project of the Union of Concerned Scientists and of Penguin Classics and available in print as well as online at www.ucsusa.org/americanstories.

Her articles have been published in several journals, including Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Environmental Quality and Geoderma. Her article “A Solar Cooking Success Story in a Darfuri Refugee Camp” appears in SHE’s Solar Cooking Newsletter. Additionally, Dr. Szulczewski has presented her research at conferences such as the Soil Science Society of America, the International Solid Waste Technology and Management Conference, the Annual Association for Integrative Studies Conference and the Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities Summer Institute.

She is a member of the Soil Science Society of America, American Chemical Society, and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. Dr. Szulczewski is an authoritative source on environmental issues, climate change and solar cooking.

    Melanie Szulczewki Presents at ACS National MeetingMelanie Szulczewski, assistant professor of environmental science, presented “Examination of the Diverse Environmental Impacts of Long-Term Acid Mine Drainage on a Virginia Stream Ecosystem” in the environmental chemistry division at the 244th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. The national meeting was held in Philadelphia, Penn., August 19 to 23.
