Sammy Ray Merrill, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of German, earned a Ph.D. (1972) in German from Cornell University and an M.A. (1966) in German from Duke University, after having received a B.A. (1963) in religion from Wake Forest University. A member of the Foreign Language Association of Virginia and the American Association of Teachers of German, Dr. Merrill is an expert on German language, literature and culture. He also is a knowledgeable source on German reunification, German xenophobia and life in the former German Democratic Republic. He has participated in five seminars on topics related to the GDR and has traveled widely in eastern Germany.
