Assumption of Risk Statement – Individuals assume a risk of injury or death while voluntarily participating in physical activity.  All participants are strongly encouraged to complete a health evaluation prior to any participation; to consult with their personal physician to determine appropriate fitness levels; to use good judgment concerning their ability to participate and their appropriate level of participation; and to carry medical insurance coverage.  The University of Mary Washington and the Fitness Center do not carry insurance to cover patrons.

User Rights As a member of the University of Mary Washington Community, eligible users have the right to:

  • Quality facilities
  • Programming opportunities that may contribute to individual physical fitness
  • A learning environment where individuals can learn about the components and facets of healthy, non-destructive living

User Responsibilities – As a member of the University of Mary Washington Community, eligible users have the responsibility to:

  • Read, understand and abide by all policies and regulations of the Fitness Center
  • Respond to and cooperate with Fitness Center staff members
  • Be considerate of other patrons and staff members and respect their individual rights
  • Take responsibility for personal and community security - examples may include, but may not be limited to intolerance of the misuse and safety of facility equipment, propping doors open, allowing individuals without valid ID or guest passes to enter the facility
  • Recognize that the facility and the furnishings are used by everyone and that abuse of those areas violates the rights of others
  • Secure all personal property and not bring valuables into the facility which could be lost or stolen

General Facility Rules and Regulations For safety reasons, clothing, bags and other equipment not used during exercise should be stored off the floor and away from the exercise area.  The Fitness Center assumes no responsibility for lost or stolen articles.  Guests are strongly encouraged to keep personal belongings in a locker and not place their belongings in the lobby of the center.

  • Users under the influence of alcohol and drugs will be asked to leave the facility, will be referred to the appropriate administrators and may have their privileges suspended.
  • Any unsafe conditions or damaged equipment should be reported to the Fitness Center staff and guest use should be discontinued until addressed or repaired.
  • Food, beverage and gum are not permitted in any exercise area with the exception of plastic water/beverage bottles with a lid or controlled spout.
  • Users are expected to comply with policies and safety instructions provided by Fitness Center staff.
  • Blocking or restriction of emergency exits is prohibited.
  • Emergency telephones and exits located in the facility are for emergency use only.  Unauthorized use will result in disciplinary action.
  • Tobacco use is not permitted in the Fitness Center.
  • For safety reasons, hats, necklaces and other jewelry should not be worn during any activity.  Street clothing is not generally permitted during exercising as it can be dangerous, confining, and can damage equipment.  Appropriate athletic attire, such as T-shirts, shorts, warm-up suits, sweat suits, or aerobic clothing is required of participating patrons at all times throughout the facility.
  • Towels should be placed between the equipment pads and the guest wearing tank tops, sports bras, or full mesh T-shirts when using the Fitness Center.  Equipment should be wiped clean following use with the appropriate provided wipes.  The Fitness Center does not provide towels.
  • Users are required to wear clean, scuff-resistant, non-marking soled, full-toed shoes (no sandals, etc.) while using the facility.  Turf shoes, cleats, and bare feet are not allowed in the Fitness Center.
  • Weights should not be dropped, stood on, or leaned against the walls, pillars, equipment or mirrors.
  • Extreme caution should be used in lifting weights to avoid any potential injury to guests.  Top loading additional weights onto existing weight stacks is unsafe and is prohibited.
  • Weight lifting hand chalk is prohibited in the Fitness Center.
  • Photography and videography are strictly prohibited in the Fitness and Wellness Center without approval from the Fitness Center Director.
  • To avoid congestion and waiting lines, guests should allow others to “work in” while using weight equipment.  Please use courtesy and consideration for others when using weight and cardio equipment. When using the cardio equipment, please limit use on the equipment to no longer than 60 minutes - 30 to 45 minutes during peak usage hours.
  • Fitness Center Facility Access – Upon entering the Fitness Center, all guests are required to check in at the reception counter and must show an appropriate ID or daily visitor pass to gain admittance. 
  • All users must present a valid UMW ID card to gain admittance to the Fitness Center.
  • All visitors must present a valid photo ID to gain admittance to the Fitness Center with an eligible user of the facility.

Please report any equipment problems to a Fitness Center Staff member immediately. If the problem cannot be readily fixed, the equipment will be taken off-line. It is important to maintain all equipment in a safe and operational mode.

The Fitness Center is subject to periodic facility maintenance closure(s).  Efforts will be made to inform patrons of the facility maintenance schedule in advance.
