Get Recognized for Your Leadership

UMW students are often recognized for their leadership, both on and off campus. Leaders also choose the University of Mary Washington's graduate programs as a way to advance their careers. Recent MBA graduates Sara and Brandon Bailey plan to use their knowledge to help their employers.

Sara and Brandon BaileyWhen Brandon Bailey and his younger sister Sara ventured into the professional world, both were armed with drive, brains—and bachelor’s degrees from Mary Washington. Brandon soon began
a promising career with an area bank. Sara quickly landed a propitious job with a local government contractor.

Before long, Sara decided to pursue graduate studies. Her brother vowed not to be left behind. The Stafford natives both entered UMW’s MBA program, often taking the same courses and teaming up on group projects.

It was fitting that Brandon, who is 18 months older than Sara, received his MBA ahead of his sister—by seconds—during the 2009 UMW commencement.

Having to balance graduate studies while keeping up with work and other demands was eye opening, said Brandon, a commercial loan officer at Union Bank & Trust. “The MBA caused me to become stricter with my time and a better ringmaster of the different acts in my circus. I made several sacrifices to juggle work, family, friends, community service, and the MBA,” he said.

The experience taught Sara how to manage her time efficiently: “Going forward I know I can handle more because I overcame this challenge. It’s all about putting things in perspective and keeping your priorities straight.” Indeed, Sara’s priorities impressed faculty at the College of Graduate and Professional Studies. She was named the 2009 outstanding MBA student—for her 3.94 GPA, commitment, work ethic, and professional demeanor.

Director of Operations and Human Resources at Brickner, Kelly & Associates, Sara aims to apply knowledge she gained in the MBA program to help grow her employer’s staff of 20 to between 50 and 100. Sara also looks forward to spending more free time—again—on volunteer activities, such as helping at St. Matthias United Methodist Church.

Still, the Baileys already plan to further their education. Brandon anticipates entering the Virginia Bankers School of Bank Management in 2009. After Sara takes a year-long break, she expects to pursue Society for Human Resource Management certification—returning to UMW. “My loyalty lies there,” she said.
