In 1942, the artist's widow, Corinne Melchers, deeded the property and its collections to the Commonwealth of Virginia as a memorial to her husband. Belmont is administered by the University of Mary Washington. A Virginia and National Historic Landmark, the museum is accredited by The American Association of Museums.

FRIENDS OF THE ORCHESTRA
Kevin Bartram is only the second conductor of the Mary Washington-Community Symphony Orchestra since its inception more than 30 years ago. Dr. Bartram brings more than 13 years of conducting experience to Mary Washington. He is an authority on the music and life of Leonard Bernstein and is the author of the textbook, Introduction to Music Technology.
Until the summer of 2002, Distinguished Professor of Music Emeritus James E. Baker led the Mary Washington-Community Symphony Orchestra. Under his leadership, the musical membership grew and flourished, culminating in an invitation to perform at New York's Carnegie Hall in March 2002.
Dr. Baker also was instrumental in creating the Friends of the Orchestra, a group that helps provide scholarships to students selected for Orchestra memberships.
