NEW IRA GIVING OPPORTUNITIES
In order to help charities further their good work, Congress recently changed the rules for charitable gifts made from individual retirement accounts (IRAs).
If you are over age 70 1/2, the Federal government permits you, in 2008 and 2009, to rollover amounts from your IRA to charity without claiming any increased income or paying any additional tax. These tax-free rollover gifts could be $1,000, $10,000 or any amount up to $100,000 in one year.

What Is A Planned Gift?

A planned gift is one which is made as part of your overall financial and estate plan. It can have immediate benefits for you, and it can also help the University of Mary Washington in the future.

When you include Mary Washington in your financial and estate plans, you help provide future support for areas of the University that are important to you. Through planned giving, you can often make a larger gift than you may have thought possible, and provide additional benefits for you and your loved ones at the same time.

What are the benefits to you?

  • You get the satisfaction of supporting a top-rated public university and its mission of providing a first-class liberal arts education to students from all walks of life.
  • This life income agreement allows you to provide for Mary Washington by giving assets and retaining an income for you and/or other beneficiaries. If you establish your life income agreement with low-yielding securities, your gift may actually increase your current income.
  • You may get several tax advantages, including charitable deductions for income, gift, and estate taxes. In many cases, you may also avoid a capital gains tax.
  • You will be invited to join the Heritage Society. This honorary giving society recognizes those who have made planned gifts to Mary Washington.
