The UMW Washington and Alvey Scholars Program
Mary Washington now has eight full merit scholarships available to in-state students with exceptional academic credentials. The first of these Washington Scholarships was awarded during the 2000-01 academic year.
In addition, one Alvey Scholarship is available for an out-of-state student. The first Alvey Scholarship was awarded during the 2007-08 academic year.
These comprehensive scholarships enable Mary Washington to compete for and attract the best and brightest students to our campus. Candidates for these scholarships are selected from freshmen accepted to the University through the "honors" admission program.
In order to remain competitive with other institutions of higher education, the Alumni Association Board of Directors in 1997, under the leadership of then-president Theresa Young Crawley '77, initiated a long-range plan for the creation and continued development of these scholarships. Each new Washington scholarship must be funded at the $250,000 level to be fully endowed; each new Alvey Scholarship must be funded at the $500,000 level to be fully endowed. Recipients for each are selected based on merit, and the scholarships are renewable for up to four years.
