Hegman honored at Tennis Center Gala Opening

Ed Hegman
Former Eagles tennis players who graduated as long ago as 1984 honored Coach Ed Hegmann with a plaque reading ‘No Guts, No Glory’ at the opening of the University Tennis Center in September.

The sparkling new University Tennis Center opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 16, 2005, followed by a daylong open house Sept. 24.

The $4.2 million structure – with six indoor courts – is located at the Battleground Athletic Complex on Hanover Street.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Center’s conference room was named in honor of athletic director and longtime women’s tennis coach Ed Hegmann. A group of alumnae who had played for Hegmann at times during his coaching tenure, from 1976 to 1999, were on hand to honor him. Among them was two-time All-American Christy Copper `91, who teaches chemistry and coaches tennis at the U.S. Naval Academy.

The alumnae presented Hegmann with a plaque engraved with the words “No Guts, No Glory,” a phrase they remembered as Hegmann’s mantra.

The tennis center will host the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship this spring.

Regular Center hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Annual membership fees – which range from $360 to $480 – apply to anyone who does not hold an EagleOne card. Everyone must pay a fee to reserve court time, but UMW students and employees pay a reduced fee. UMW students still may play free on the 12 outdoor courts at the Battleground.
