The
American Studies Program allows students to choose from
among three options in the exploration of American culture.
All three options require major to take the same set
of eight core courses (24 credits) which range broadly
across American culture with the aid of identifying
and analyzing major characteristics from colonial life
to modern society, exploring behavior and beliefs, and
making reasoned judgments about the American experience.
Beyond the core courses,
Option
1 allows majors to select their 15 related field
credits from an extensive list of humanities and social
science courses related to American culture.
Option
2 provides majors with a Human Rights focus, and
requires them to take AMST 333. Option 2 offers a separate
list of courses from which majors may select four additional
related field courses to complete the major.
Option
3 allows majors to take a comparative approach to
American culture by completing their related work in
courses related to Latin America. Majors who choose
this option must take History 361/362: History of Latin
America.
The
American Studies major has a strong focus on critical
reading and writing and is ideal preparation for graduate
school, law school, or careers in teaching, journalism,
communications, library science, public service, and
business.
