Welcome to International Academic Services

The Office of International Academic Services (IAS) provides support to students interested in study abroad opportunities and serves the needs of international students and scholars.

Study Abroad

We administer sixteen UMW partner programs and thirteen faculty-led programs. In addition to these UMW study abroad programs, students desiring an educational experience abroad may select from a variety of programs offered by other universities and providers. UMW students can study abroad for a semester, academic year, summer or during the spring and winter breaks and earn academic credits toward their graduation requirements.

International student and Scholar Services

IAS serves the needs of international students and scholars by providing immigration services and admissions services to international exchange students. Our office staff members guide international students and scholars through the process of obtaining their visas and maintaining status. An international student orientation is held at the beginning of each semester to help ease the transition to studying and living in the United States. The orientation program covers immigration, academic, financial, and personal matters. The orientation also includes a tour of Fredericksburg and a shopping trip to pick up additional items you may need during your stay.

International programs and events

Our office also supports international-focused activities and programs such as the International Friendship Program, potluck dinners, and field trips. The Foreign Film Series is sponsored by the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and is free and open to the public. The James Farmer Multicultural Center organizes the annual Multicultural Fair in early April.
