Description
The Carlos and Carol Muldoon Martel Scholarship is awarded each year to qualified students interested in participating in a semester or year-long study abroad program. The recipient will receive $1,000.
Eligibility Requirements

The recipient shall be an undergraduate student with demonstrated financial need who intends to pursue study abroad as part of their academic training.

The recipient must have completed at least three full semesters with a minimum of 36 graded credit hours, a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, and must plan to complete their baccalaureate degree at UMW.

The scholarship shall be awarded for not more than one year, and not less than one semester. Study abroad programs limited to the summer term only are not eligible.

Special consideration shall be given to students whose study abroad plans include a strong focus on language studies.
Stipulations
Recipients of the Martel scholarship will be expected to write an article about their time abroad for the study abroad newspaper and/or IAS website.
Application Procedures
- Verify with the Financial Aid Office that you can demonstrate financial need.
- Submit one letter of recommendation from a UMW faculty member. The letter should include a statement regarding the student’s commitment to making the most out of a study abroad opportunity.
- Submit responses to the following three questions. Be sure to include your name, date of birth, and program name.
1) How do you expect the content of the study abroad program to contribute to your academic, career, and personal goals?
2) In what campus-based activity and/or community-based service have you been involved? What insights have you derived from these experiences?
3) Please describe a cross-cultural experience you have had and the insight(s)you have derived from it.
