The Grellet C. Simpson and Barbara Alden International Scholarships

Deadline

March 20, 2009 for the 2009/2010 academic year.

Description

The Grellet C. Simpson and Barbara Alden International Scholarships are awarded each year by the University of Mary Washington Alumni Association to enable two outstanding undergraduate students to study outside the United States. Previous recipients of the scholarships have pursued studies in a wide range of disciplines and in countries around the world.

Selection Criteria

In naming the Simpson and Alden Scholars, the selection committee considers academic achievement and the integration of study abroad into the student's undergraduate program, as well as the student's ability to complete and benefit from the international experience.

Eligibility

Academically qualified undergraduate students at the University of Mary Washington who intend to pursue scholarly study abroad as part of their academic experience are eligible to apply to the Simpson and Alden scholarships. Applicants must have completed at least three full semesters within a minimum of 36 graded hours and must complete the baccalaureate degree at the University of Mary Washington. Students are required to meet with the Director of International Academic Services (IAS) for program review and approval before submitting the application.

Period of Award and Stipend

The Simpson and Alden scholarships are awarded for not more than one year and not less than one semester. Programs limited to the summer term are not eligible for consideration. The amount of the stipend will be adjusted to the estimated budget submitted by the students, but will not exceed $5,000. Awards are made in spring semester for the following academic year.

Stipulations

Other scholarships may be held concurrently with the Simpson or Alden scholarship. The combined amount shall not exceed the total cost of the program.

Application procedures

Applications are available from the Office of International Academic Services, the Office of Alumni Programs, or on the web as downloadable Microsoft Word Forms or Adobe Acrobat Files. Applicants are expected to submit a proposed academic program that has been approved by the Office of International Academic Affairs, an itemized budget (Forms A and A-1), three confidential recommendations (Form C), a transcript of the academic record, and if applicable, an appraisal of foreign language competence (Form B). Applications must be returned to the Office of Academic Affairs (GW 314) by March 14, 2008.

Selection

A selection committee composed of alumni and faculty representatives reviews all applications and interviews all finalists. The committee selects two scholarship recipients and one alternate.
