The historic museum building houses an object collection of over 1,600 items, including decorative arts, personal items, costumes and memorabilia. Additionally, the on-site archives houses over 10,000 documents, and the library holds over 3,000 volumes of rare and historic books.
Visitors to the museum may take guided tours of 5 exhibition galleries, browse in the Museum Shop and enjoy the lovely Memorial Garden. Those interested in furthering their Monroe knowledge may also make appointments to do research in the museum’s archives. Events held throughout the year also provide fun, family-friendly entertainment.
A guided tour takes approximately 30 minutes, though you may linger to re-visit the self-guided galleries. There is an admission fee of $5 ($4 for members of AAA), $1 for children. Group rates are available. Members of the Friends of the James Monroe Museum are always free (and also receive a discount of 10% in the Museum Shop, as well as other benefits). UMW employees and students are free with a UMW identification card, and the Museum participates in the Virginia TimeTravelers Program.
The Museum is open from 10:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Saturday, 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sundays. During the months of December, January and February the museum closes at 4:00pm daily.
