Description

With several thousand titles on a variety of media (e.g., LaserDisc, DVD, VHS) the University's Audiovisual Collection comprises many foreign language and classical films, as well as many popular titles. This collection was created initially by a group of faculty, through a Funds for Excellence grant, and has recently been assigned to the Simpson Library Circulation Department.

Searching the Collection

You may search by title from the basic search page in the UMW Libraries' Catalog found on the UMW Libraries' homepage.  A complete listing of audiovisual materials can be viewed by typing PN 1993.1.A into the search box on the basic search page and selecting "Call Number" from the dropdown menu.

Services

Checkout

Titles in the collection are available for check-out to faculty, staff, and students only.  These items may be checked out for three days, unless the title has been placed on reserve.  Films can be recalled, if currently checked out.  Films can not be placed on hold.  Film check-out is not available for secondary cardholders, guest patrons, or retired faculty and staff.

To check out a film, please bring your title requests to the Circulation Desk.

Students with overdue films will be charged $1.00 per day.  If the film has been recalled, the student will be charged $3.00 per day.

A faculty member may designate a student proxy to check out film on his or her behalf.  Call the Circulation Department at 540-654-1125 (press 0) to find out how to authorize proxies to act on your behalf.

Student Viewings

UMW students may check out titles to view outside of the library.  Computers are available on the first floor of the Simpson Library for DVD, VHS tape, and LaserDisc viewing.  Headsets are available for check-out at the Circulation Desk, but students are also encouraged to bring their own earbuds or earphones to use in the systems.

Film Reserve

Faculty members at UMW may put any title in the collection on reserve.  Titles can be placed on a 2-hour, 6-hour, 1-day, or 3-day reserve.  Reserve lists must be submitted on the Course Reserve Material Form. Faculty who would like items to be put on reserve at Simpson Library may use the web-based form or submit the Course Reserve Materials List Form (.doc file) to Suzanne Crosnicker at scrosnic@umw.edu

Library Classroom

At the present time, due to staffing shortages, we will be unable to provide class film viewings in the Simpson Library classroom.

Requesting New Items

If you need to obtain a media title that is not in the collection, you may submit a purchase request to Renee Davis, Collection Development Librarian. She can be contacted at 540-654-1758 or rdavis2@umw.edu. Purchase decisions are guided by the Libraries’ Collection Development Policy.

When requesting a new film, please include the title, director, and year of production so we can ensure that the correct item is purchased.
