Open Mic Night!
Tuesday, September 26 (9-10 pm)
Come read from a book (for example, any of the Harry Potter series) which has been challenged, restricted, removed, or banned somewhere in the United States! Come hear Ray Tuttle read a children’s book or two! Suggested book lists are available from the Office of Judicial Affairs and Community Responsibility, Simpson Library, and from the UMW Bookstore. (In choosing your reading material, please be sensitive to the University’s Statement of Community Values.)
Location: The Wash Room

Movie Night!
Wednesday, September 27 (6:30-9 pm)
Embracing the First Amendment might mean tolerating forms of expression with which we might not agree, and might even find repugnant. For many Americans, no better demonstration of this principle can be found than in the life of Larry Flynt, publisher of Hustler magazine. Milos Forman’s 1996 film The People vs. Larry Flynt takes a hard but engaging look at the publisher and his milieu. Come see and discuss this 130 minute movie, which stars Woody Harrelson, Courtney Love, and Edward Norton.
Location: Chandler 102

Scavenger Hunt!
To celebrate Banned Book Week Sept. 25 -30, 2006, the UMW Bookstore, Simpson Library and Judicial Affairs Committee are sponsoring a campus scavenger hunt. Pick up a copy of the scavenger list and the rules at the Bookstore, on or after Monday, Sept. 25, 2006. All correct complete lists will be entered in a drawing. The grand prize will be a $25.00 UMW Bookstore Gift Card!

Bookmarks, buttons, t-shirts, and other nifty things will be given away at these events! Come and celebrate the First Amendment!

Great Book Giveaway

Throughout the week of March 20th, Simpson Library will be offering to the public books that have recently been withdrawn from the Library's collection. We are also including donations of personal books from Library staff members and private individuals.

Materials are withdrawn from the Library's collection only after careful review by the Collection Development Librarian, the Library's area specialists, and the faculty within the particular discipline. Many matters are taken into consideration during this review; for example, physical condition, items replaced by fresher copies, multiple copies and items determined by subject specialists and faculty to be out-of-date or superceded by more current information.

Beginning early Monday morning the book trucks will be located along the front wall of the Library--please come by and browse!
