Databases
- Academic Search Complete (approximately 1880s to date). Provides abstracts of articles (summaries), and full-text articles from more than 10,000 books, scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, and reference works on a wide variety of topics.
- The Atlas of North American English: Phonetics, Phonology and Sound Change (1992-1999). A "multimedia reference tool" that provides a detailed record of the "regional dialects of English spoken in the urbanized areas of the United States and Canada in the years 1992 to 1999."
- Communication and Mass Media Complete (coverage varies; mostly 1930s to date). Provides abstracts of articles (summaries) of more than 600 journals in areas related to communication and mass media. The database also includes the full text of some 325 journals.
- Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts (1973 to date). Indexes articles covering topics in the study of language. See the
video on using this database. - PsycINFO (1887 to date) Indexes and abstracts the professional and academic literature in linguistics, sociology, education, speech, and more.
- Social Sciences Abstracts (1971 to date). Interdisciplinary database covering more than 400 English-language social science journals.
- Sociological Abstracts (1963 to date). Indexes more than 2,600 journals in anthropology, sociology, demography, and other social sciences.
Databases in Related Disciplines
- American Periodicals Series Online (1741-1900). Provides digitized images of more than 1,000 American magazines, journals, and newspapers.
- Education Full Text (1983 to date). Abstracting coverage begins 1994; partial full-text coverage begins 1996.
- ERIC (1996 to date). Indexes journal articles, books, theses, curricula, conference papers, etc. in education.
- FirstSearch databases. Provides access to dozens of indexes and databases in a variety of disciplines.
- Humanities Abstracts (1983 to date). Indexes a broad range of some 500 magazines and journal publications in the humanities.
- Humanities & Social Sciences Index Retrospective: 1907-1984. Indexes nearly 1,200 periodicals.
- MLA International Bibliography (1963 to date). A comprehensive, international index to articles and books on language, literature, and the dramatic arts.
- Periodicals Index Online (formerly PCI Web) (1665 to 1995). Provides author, title, and keyword access to the tables-of-contents pages of more than 4,000 worldwide periodicals.

Virtual libraries
Virtual libraries contain annotated collections of high-quality Internet resources that librarians or other information specialists have carefully selected. Users can usually browse by subject or search.
- Librarians' Internet Index. See especially the Language category under Arts and Humanities. The subdivisions on the left help you to browse the hundreds of language resources. In addition, you can use the drop-down menu to narrow and focus your search.
- The Internet Public Library. See especially the Language & Linguistics category under Arts & Humanities.
Directories and Guides
- Baragona's History of the English Language and General Linguistics Home Page. Annotated list of sites related to phonetics, historical linguistics, dialect studies, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics.
- The Linguist List. An annotated directory of linguistic and language resources.
- Yamada Language Guides. More than 140 languages are represented in this "definitive guide to language resources on the World Wide Web."
Morpholology, Ethnology, and Languages
- Ethnologue: Languages of the World. An encyclopedic reference work that catalogs the more than 6,900 known languages in the world.
- Linguistic Atlas Projects. The Projects have "one thing in common: studying dialects of English as it is spoken in the United States."
- Phonological Atlas of North America. Provides an "overview of the current development of North American dialects in urbanized areas, and to provide the basis for more detailed studies of particular areas."
Psycholinguistics
- Child Language Data Exchange System. The various tools included in the CHILDES are used to study conversational interactions. "These tools include a database of transcripts, programs for computer analysis of transcripts, methods for linguistic coding,and systems for linking transcripts to digitized audio and video."
- WordNet: A Lexical Database for English. The design of this lexical reference system is "inspired by current psycholinguistic theories of human lexical memory. English nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are organized into synonym sets, each representing one underlying lexical concept."
Sociolinguistics
- Nonverbal Communication Research Page. Provides links to numerous relevant sources (organizations, journals, scholars, publishers, and labs) involved with the study of human nonverbal behavior.
Organizations
- Center for Applied Linguistics. Designed to promote and improve the teaching and learning of languages and to provide information on language and culture.
- International Phonetic Association. Promotes the "scientific study of phonetics and the various practical applications of that science."
