Finding Books on the Shelf
In order to locate a book in the UMW Libraries’ collection, you will need two know two things about a book – the call number and the location.
call numbers
Each book is assigned a unique Library of Congress call number. You will need to make note of these call numbers in order to locate a book.
Locations
Books will be located at either the Simpson Library or at the CGPS Stafford Library.
The online catalog will provide you with the location for every book in the UMW Libraries’ collection
A location of "Stacks" indicates that a book belongs to the Simpson Library. At the Simpson Library, call numbers beginning with letters A through L are located on the Third floor. Call numbers beginning with letters M through T are located on the Second floor. Call numbers beginning with the letters U through Z are on the First floor. Oversized books are located at the north end of the Second and Third floors. Books with a location of "Reference" or a call number beginning with REFB are located on the First floor, to the left of the Information Desk.
A location of "Stafford Stacks" or “Stafford Campus” indicates that a book belongs to the CGPS Stafford Library.
Can i borrow books located at the other campus LIBrary?
Yes. Please see How do I get books from the other campus library? for information on how to request materials from the other campus library.
How do I get books located at the other campus library?
If the book you need is located at the other campus library, you can request that book by using ILLIAD. ILLIAD is a service that allows faculty, staff, and students affiliated with one UMW campus to request books (and articles) from the other UMW campus.
In order to use ILLIAD, you must create an online account. After creating an online ILLIAD account, you will be able to request books located at the other campus. Please see our ILLIAD/Interlibrary Loan (ILL) FAQ for information on submitting requests.
You may also visit the other campus library and checkout books with your valid EagleOne card.
What does the Recall button do?
Only use the
button to request books that are currently checked-out. The Recall button does not allow you request or hold any library book.
If you would like to recall a library book that is checked out, click the
button. After you click the recall button, enter the 16 numbers located on the front of your EagleOne ID card (Patron Number) and select the location where you would like to pick-up your recalled library books - the Simpson Library or the Stafford Campus. After you enter this information, click "Submit".
You can also fill out a Request slip at the Circulation Desk of the Simpson Library or the CGPS Stafford Library.
What if the call number says netlibrary?
netLibrary is an electronic book collection available to the faculty, staff, and students of the University of Mary Washington. You can access netLibrary e-books directly through the online catalog. Please see our netLibrary GuideMe for more information on viewing e-books through UMW’s online catalog.
Please note: To access netLibrary from off-campus, you will need to create a free online account.
How do I get a book that says "on order"?
