Databases

UMW Libraries Subscription Datasets and Databases with Time Series Data

ICPSR : Online repository of data sets from the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research. Data sets are the raw data obtained by researchers, such as the answers to surveys, which may be downloaded and used for new projects and applied research by ICPSR members. Full access available only to UMW faculty, students, and staff who create accounts using their UMW email addresses.

Mergent Online : Public company Excel downloadable financial statements for U.S. publicly traded and some international and privately held corporations, 1996 - present. Search and create custom reports for financial factors and other variables, such as stock prices and primary competitors.

The databases and datasets listed at left provide access free of charge for UMW students, faculty, and staff to statistics and raw data that is generally not freely available on the Web.

United States Census

UMW Libraries is a longtime member of the Federal Depository Library Program and receives and maintains selected government documents, including numerous Census publications. Many recent Census publications are available through free government websites.

  • Find selected 1980 and 1990 Census records in the Reference section at REFB HA 201 and REFB HA 202
  • Find other original U.S. Census print publications dating as far back as 1850 in the Stacks on the third floor at the call number HA 201
  • Use American FactFinder on the Web to find U.S. Census statistics from 2000-present
  • Use the Historical Census Browser from the University of Virginia Library to search some U.S. Census statistics from 1790 - 1960

International Statistical Sources

OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development)

    The OECD comprises 30 highly developed democracies, including the United States, Mexico, and Canada, numerous European nations, Australia, and New Zealand.

  • OECD Economic Outlook : Trends and Statistics for OECD member countries. Published in June and December. Simpson Library has 1987-2008. REFB HA155 .O18

United Nations and UNESCO (UNITED nATIONS eDUCATION, sCIENTIFIC, AND cULTURAL oRGANIZATION)

    The United Nations is one of the few sources of statistics from all the world's nations. Due to disparities in reporting infrastructures, publication of U.N. compilations tends to be slow and statistics from lesser developed nations may be rudimentary or appear to be out of date. However, these are generally the most recent data available.

World Bank

The World Bank is the informal umbrella term used to designate several agencies of the United Nations whose purpose is to monitor and promote international development and to provide low-interest and interest-free loans and grants to low income countries.

The World Bank regularly reports statistics and trends in international development.
