Community Life

A Center for Cultural Activity

Students Shopping at the Multicultural FairA liberal arts education is about exchanging ideas with people from many walks of life and growing in the process. No wonder the Multicultural Center plays so large a role in campus life at Mary Washington. Named in honor of UMW Distinguished Professor James L. Farmer, Jr., one of the great leaders of the American Civil Rights Movement, the Multicultural Center offers programs that support community life at the University. Here's why:

  • The Cultural Awareness Series brings internationally known speakers to UMW and creates a forum of creative thinking on current social and political issues.
  • Special programs are coordinated by the Center for Asian Cultural Week, Black History Month, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, National American Indian Heritage Month, National Hispanic Heritage Month, and Women's History Month.
  • The Multicultural Fair attracts nearly 4,000 people to campus each spring to enjoy cultural entertainment, international food, and ethnic crafts of countless vendors.
  • A strong mentoring and outreach program in partnership with campus student associations provides an opportunity for you to connect with others and make a difference in the campus community and beyond.
