Online Life

One-U Portal

OneU PortalIn Fall 2005, the University unveiled Phase I of the new Web portal, called "OneU." The portal has the promise to lead the way to a virtual University community online.

Student special interest group communications

Students are able to create their own online groups, schedule meetings and study sessions, hold online chat, and post announcements for their peers. Student clubs and organizations, residence halls, and special interest groups, are using the portal to connect with each other about their out-of-classroom experiences, and organization activities.

Faculty and student exchanges

Faculty have the ability to use the portal to deliver curriculum-based content via RSS feeds through fully-customizable portal "channels." Currently, the portal is being tested for full integration with the Banner Student Information system, allowing for even closer connection between a student's classroom and online experiences in the portal.

Commuting and adult student community-building

The portal holds promise for the commuting, adult and graduate student to participate in community groups, and connect to other students outside the classroom in a way that can sometimes be  difficult in the "off-line" world of the part-time working student. In conjunction with the administration and faculty at the College of Graduate and Professional Studies, we are taking the adult student very much into account as we plan tailored portal content.
