Judith A. Parker, Professor of English and Linguistics, earned a Ph.D. (1992) and M.A. in linguistics from Brown University, after receiving a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College. Her early research focused on speech processing and dyslexia, and the oral narratives of children and sexual assault survivors. Dr. Parker has guided an interdisciplinary research team focusing on linguistic and psychological approaches to narrative and trauma. Presentations and workshops include innovative methods in trauma research, writing and trauma, and ethics and key issues in mentoring undergraduate students in the practice of sexual assault research. Her recent scholarship and presentations focus on suppressed discourse and language of sexual assault survivors, as well as teaching introductory linguistics to undergraduate students about applications of linguistics in everyday life.

Dr. Parker’s newest workshops have introduced activist, educational, playback, and other experiential theater techniques to heighten observation and strengthen analytical skills to explore inequities in ability and health, class, ethnicity, gender, language, and race. Dr. Parker co-chairs the Undergraduate Program Advisory Committee of the Linguistic Society of America and is active on LSA’s Committee on the Status of Women in Linguistics. She is a member of the National Women’s Studies Association, the Association for Women in Psychology, the Acoustical Society of America, and the International Dyslexia Association.
