Black History Month
TRUE LIFE: I’m an African American...
Real Stories, Real Struggles, Real People
Today the spirit of freedom continues to break the bonds of hatred and unchain the shackles of injustice. The belief in a better tomorrow has inspired ordinary people to make extraordinary achievements for the collective betterment of humankind. Still, the quest for respect and true equality is not over. The James Farmer Multicultural Center, the Black History Month Committee, and the Black Student Association ask that you join us during Black History Month on a cultural expedition toward a discovery that will impact the rest of our lives. We invite you to explore the adversities of the past and how they are linked with both the injustices and progress of society today. Engage in real stories with real struggles and how they were overcome by real people just like you. Since knowing the past is the key to making a better future, let’s begin this journey together to unlock the gates of our minds as we aspire to dream bigger and ultimately obtain a greater reality.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED

We are especially seeking events explicitly related to our 2010 theme, Click here to download 2010 Proposal Forms. Please send your completed form by November 6th to Courtney Chapman, either via e-mail (cchapma2@umw.edu) or via the James Farmer Multicultural Center (Lee Hall, Room 211, CAS campus).
(2) Offer your "Open Class." For faculty especially, if you have a lecture, class discussion or other event planned for one of your spring courses that you would like included as part of Women's History Month, please let us know.
- If you hope to offer an open class, but haven't finalized your syllabi yet, don't worry--there is plenty of time. A special call for OPEN CLASSES will go out later in the semester, and we will accept submissions as late as the week before classes begin in January. All WHM open classes will be announced via the JFMC website.
- If you have an open class in mind that relates explicitly to our 2010 theme, we encourage you to submit it for inclusion on the WHM printed calendar--the November 6 deadline applies.
