Emerging Leaders Program

2009 – 2010

James Farmer Multicultural Center

Purpose:

Emerging Leaders is for underrepresented students who want to develop and enhance their leadership and multicultural aptitude for personal and professional use. The Emerging Leaders program  will provide students with an opportunity to build leadership skills, multicultural awareness, and social capital on campus by working with peers, faculty/staff, and the local community.

Objectives:

Emerging Leaders will provide the following experiences:

  • Exposure to community service and service learning opportunities.
  • Exposure to seasoned on- and off-campus leaders through the guest speaker series.

Emerging Leaders are encouraged to use all of their experiences toward the scholarship application process in Spring 2010.

Scheduled meetings and assignments:

Participants are required to attend each scheduled meeting and complete one assignment for credit.(ASSIGNMENTS). In addition to the following schedule, other events can be found at www.umw.edu/osacs and www.umw.edu/multicultural. If you have questions, please contact Courtney Chapman at cchapma2@umw.edu.

Only 2 excused absences will be allowed throughout the academic year. You are asked to email LaNita Weisenberger at lweisenb@umw.edu at least 24 hours prior to the meeting if you are unable to attend. Excused absences will be approved on a case by case basis; therefore email notification does not necessarily mean that an absence is excused. Students who are currently receiving the Presidential Diversity Award are not eligible for the Emerging Leaders Program.
