The University of Mary Washington has reached its five-year $50 million goal for the Mary Washington First Campaign more than a month ahead of schedule. The announcement was made Saturday, May 14, at a special event in the Chandler Ballroom of the University Center.

Thompson Steen ’83 announced that a total of $50,658,141 has been raised from 16,991 donors since the campaign began July 1, 2011. The average campaign gift totaled $2,952, he said.
Hurley initiated the comprehensive Mary Washington First Campaign to enhance support for seven vital areas at the University’s three campuses: the renovation of UMW’s historic amphitheatre, program initiatives, the Fund for Mary Washington, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education and student scholarships.
Currently, UMW has raised $2.6 million for the amphitheatre project, received bequest pledges totaling $19,335,171 and added 112 new members to its prestigious Washington Society recognizing donors with cumulative giving of $100,000 and more.
Campaign donors also created 95 new scholarships for UMW students, including one from the Hurley children and their families.
The $25,000 pledge from the Hurley children and their families “helped put us over the top,” said Anne Steen. The gift will create a scholarship named for Rick and Rose Hurley.
“This truly is a very special gift from the heart and one that will keep giving in so many ways for years to come,” he said.
Rector of the Board of Visitors Holly Tace Cuellar ’89 paid tribute to UMW’s ninth president and his wife.
“Richard V. Hurley was the leader that Mary Washington needed at the beginning of the 21st century,” she said. “Because of him the University is poised for a second century that will be even more promising than our first. And Rose, we owe you a debt that cannot be repaid. Your love, support and eagerness to partner on this journey with Rick have made all the difference.”
Gifts and pledges to the University will continue to count toward the Mary Washington First Campaign until its official conclusion on June 30, 2016. The date also marks Hurley’s last day as president. On July 1, Troy Paino will become UMW’s 10th president.
