Gari Melchers Home and Studio To Host Bus Trip to Hillwood Museum
September 3, 2007Gari Melchers Home and Studio is organizing a motorcoach trip to Hillwood Museum and Gardens in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, October 4. Following a tour of the garden and mansion, participants will enjoy an afternoon tea in the museum cafe.
The tour will leave from the Belmont parking lot at 11 a.m. and return by 5:30 p.m. The cost, which includes transportation, museum admission and tea, is $65 for Friends of Belmont members and $80 for non-members.
Hillwood was the Washington residence of Marjorie Merriweather Post (1887–1973), cereal heiress, collector and philanthropist. Post collected throughout her life, emphasizing the finest French and Russian objects. She assembled the largest collection of Russian imperial art outside of Russia, as well as a magnificent collection of 18th-century French decorative arts.
Comprising 25 acres, the estate features a Japanese-style garden, a French parterre, cutting and rose gardens, greenhouses and lunar lawn.

Gari Melchers Home and Studio is a 26-acre estate and former residence of the artist Gari Melchers and his wife Corinne. The property, which is operated by the University of Mary Washington, is both a Virginia Historic Landmark and a National Historic Landmark. Located at 224 Washington St. in Falmouth, Va., a quarter mile west of the intersection of U.S. 1 and U.S. 17, it is open daily with an admission charge. The museum website is www.GariMelchers.org.
