Gari Melchers Home and Studio to Host Photography Exhibit

Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont will host the exhibition “Belmont Through a Lens: Photographs by Frances Benjamin Johnston” from Saturday, March 27 through Wednesday, June 20. The exhibition features 18 historic images of Belmont and runs concurrently with the Fredericksburg Area Museum’s general survey of Johnston’s work, “History Through a Lens: The Photographs of Frances Benjamin Johnston.” One of the first American female photojournalists, Johnston focused on celebrity portraiture, documentary work, estates and gardens and vernacular architecture of the American South. In 1927, Johnston was granted private local funding to produce a photographic survey of important early buildings, private residences and gardens of the City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County, Va., including Gari Melchers Home and Studio. Gari Melchers Home and Studio To Offer Family Tours Through Labor Day

Gari Melchers Home and Studio will offer Family Tours geared to children ages 5-12 during the summer months at a new reduced price. Two children will be admitted free with each paying adult. Family-friendly tours will be available daily at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Tours are free for members of Friends of Belmont. Prior registration for family tours is not necessary. This summer’s Family Tour theme is “Children at Belmont.” Various vignettes throughout the historic 1790s house will depict the experiences of several children who either lived at Belmont or who visited the Melchers for extended periods of time. Homemade ice cream parties, a puppet show featuring Corinne’s original hand puppets, fishing for eels in the Rappahannock River, feeding “Polly” the parrot and other fun stories will be shared with guests. Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont will host its 31st Annual Holiday Open House on Sunday, December 14 from 10 to 5 p.m. The historic house and stone studio are open to the public without charge on this day. The Open House will feature festive interior house displays and outdoor fresh decorations by Town and Country Garden Club. In the Studio Pavilion the Spotsylvania Middle School Bulldog Quartet will perform at 1 p.m., the Fredericksburg Chamber Chorale will perform at 2:30 p.m. and the Fredericksburg Academy Upper School Chorus will perform at 4 p.m. The Museum Shop will offer shoppers a selection of “Vintage Christmas” items. Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont will offer daily “Sights, Smells, Sounds and Stories: Holidays with the Melchers” 30-minute guided tours of the lavishly decorated Georgian house throughout December. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours run on the hour, starting at 10:30 a.m. and are included in the regular admission price of $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and $5 for students. Docents will bring holidays at Belmont to life, using selections from American artist Gari Melchers and his wife Corinne’s diaries and letters, personal recipes and Christmas cards, photographs, and other archival material. Guest participation is encouraged by engaging all the senses. Corinne Melchers poignantly described in a letter to her mother a grand 1921 New Year’s Day afternoon tea and dance she and her husband hosted at Belmont. Gari Melchers Home and Studio is hosting the exhibition “Artists in Their Studios: Images from the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art” from Saturday, September 13 through Sunday, November 23. “Artists in Their Studios” features 55 vintage photographs of American artists in their studios. From the sumptuously furnished studios of the late 19th century to the austere workrooms of the present day, studio spaces have played a dynamic role in the history of American art – not simply reflecting aesthetic visions, but informing them. Gari Melchers Home and Studio will offer Family Fun and Learning Tours daily at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. from Monday, June 16 through Labor Day. The 45-minute family friendly program allows guests to observe, discuss and explore art and history. After the tour, visitors are encouraged to extend their experience by sketching outside.   Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 and older and free for members Friends of Belmont. Registration is not needed. Gari Melchers Home and Studio To Host Talk on Science of Bird Song

Gari Melchers Home and Studio will host “Singing for their Supper: The Science of Bird Song,” a talk by Andrew Dolby, associate professor of biology at the University of Mary Washington. The presentation will take place in the Studio Pavilion on Sunday, April 20 at 2 p.m.  Admission to the lecture is included in the general admission fee of $10 for adults and $5 for students. Admission is free for children ages 5 and under and members of Friends of Belmont. Reservations are not required and light refreshments will be served.  The audio-enhanced, illustrated talk will explore the science of bird song, including the type of tools scientists use to decipher the messages encoded in song, the kinds of information birds transmit to each other when they sing and why some species sing with greater complexity than others. Gari Melchers Home and Studio will host Deborah Davis, author of “Strapless: John Singer Sargent and the Fall of Madame X” at a lecture, book signing and dinner on Saturday, March 15 at 6 p.m.   Davis will discuss John Singer Sargent’s most famous painting of 23-year-old New Orleans Creole Virginie Gautreau, who moved to Paris and quickly became the “it girl” of her day. Unveiled at the 1884 Paris Salon, Sargent’s portrait of the striking Gautreau generated the attention she craved, but sadly led to infamy instead of stardom. Sargent, a contemporary of Gari Melchers, was able to weather the scandal, and his career only grew.   Davis, also the author of “The Secret Lives of Frames” and “Party of the Century,” is a writer and veteran film executive. Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont will offer daily “Holidays with the Melchers” guided tours of the 1790s historic house from Monday, December 10 through Wednesday, January 2.  The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Tours run on the hour, starting at 10:30 a.m., and are included in the regular admission price of $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and $5 for students. Docents will recount how American artist Gari Melchers and his wife, Corinne, spent the holiday season at Belmont in the 1920s and ’30s using excerpts from diaries, letters and archival photographs, her personal recipes, oral histories and other research material. Interior house decorations designed and installed by K2 Designs and exterior fresh decorations by the Town and Country Garden Club will set the holiday scene. Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont will hold the exhibition “J.C. Leyendecker: America’s ‘Other’ Illustrator” from Sunday, December 9 through Sunday, February 3, 2008. The exhibition’s opening day is set to coincide with Belmont’s 30th Annual Holiday Open House, held on Sunday, December 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. Both the exhibition and the open house are open to the public without charge on this day.  Joseph Christian Leyendecker (1874-1951) may not be as well known as his fellow American illustrator Norman Rockwell, but during his long career, his illustrations were some of the most popular commercial art of its day, being associated with such familiar names as Colliers, The Saturday Evening Post and Kellogg’s. Leyendecker produced 322 covers for The Saturday Evening Post, more than any other artist, including Rockwell.
