Virginia Governor Appoints UMW Board Member

Gov. Terry McAuliffe has appointed Carlos Del Toro of Stafford, Va., to the University of Mary Washington Board of Visitors.  Del Toro, known for his leadership and innovation, is founder, CEO and president of SBG Technology Solutions Inc., a Washington-based engineering services and consulting firm. Four years ago, he was recognized by the Small Business Administration as the Small Business Person of the Year in Region III, encompassing Virginia, Maryland and D.C. A former naval officer and White House Fellow, Del Toro is a native of Havana, Cuba. He graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy and earned advanced degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School, George Washington University, and the Naval War College. He is a director on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Council on Small Business and past president of the board of the Capital Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Elite Eagles Make School History

The University of Mary Washington men’s basketball team saw the greatest season in school history come to a close on Saturday, March 16 at the Anderson Center, falling to Williams College, 79-46, in the NCAA Division III Tournament Quarterfinals. The Eagles finish with a school record 25 wins, and close at 25-6 overall. The team advanced to the Elite 8 round of the NCAA Championships on Friday after defeating Virginia Wesleyan, 74-70. "I'm so proud of these guys," said a teary UMW head coach Rod Wood, surrounded by his seniors and junior captain Taylor Johnson, in the post-game press conference Saturday. "In defeat, I'm just as proud as I've been of these boys after every win. Tonight, we just hit the wall I thought we'd hit a month ago, or in some guys' cases, two months ago, or four." Hyatt Place Fredericksburg To Open in Eagle Village

The Hyatt Place Fredericksburg will open on Tuesday, Jan. 21 in the Eagle Village mixed-use development located across from the University of Mary Washington’s Fredericksburg campus. The hotel, built by the UMW Foundation, is the first boutique hotel of its kind serving the university, downtown Fredericksburg and the Mary Washington Health System, according to Jim Fournier, general manager of the hotel. “Hyatt Place Fredericksburg at Mary Washington is located in a very desirable and historic area, and we’re looking forward to creating a positive travel experience for each and every guest that walks through our doors,” Fournier said.
