UMW Philanthropy Class Awards Grants to Area Agencies

Students in the University of Mary Washington’s philanthropy class awarded more than $10,000 in grants to three Fredericksburg-area nonprofit organizations: the Lloyd F. Moss Free Clinic; Serenity Home of Fredericksburg; and THRIVE, the Healing Center. Class representative Matt Cronin announced the awards during a check presentation ceremony on Monday, Dec. 3 at the university’s Jepson Alumni Executive Center. The ceremony, streamed live through Google Hangout, was the culmination of the semester-long Economics of Philanthropy and the Nonprofit Sector course taught by Professor of Economics Robert Rycroft. This year, the class of 26 students received 53 applications for the grants, funded by philanthropist Doris Buffet’s Learning by Giving Foundation. “We chose the recipients based off of how well the programs they wanted to fund fit in with our mission statement,” said junior Taylor Knight. UMW Philharmonic Featured in PBS Holiday Special

The University of Mary Washington Philharmonic Orchestra makes its PBS debut in the holiday special “A Fiddler’s Holiday,” set to air on PBS stations across the country throughout the holiday season. The concert, filmed during the Philharmonic’s 2011 holiday pops concert and produced by four-time Emmy winner Jim Brown, features the Jay Ungar and Molly Mason Family Band. During post-production this past spring, UMW Philharmonic Director Kevin Bartram pitched the show to the PBS, which approved the show for national distribution this Christmas. “I told him that the show is about the acoustic fiddle traditions that Ungar is known for, family warmth and musical fun,” Bartram said. “They said yes to the project, and we look forward to seeing it air.” The 60-minute special includes scenes of downtown Fredericksburg during the holidays, as well as footage of UMW and other historic sites. Students Hone Leadership Skills at Conference

“Do I inspire others? Am I doing the best job I can as a leader? Would it be ok if everyone acted as I do?” were a few of the important questions that University of Mary Washington students asked themselves as part of a presentation on ethics and leadership at the sixth annual Student Leadership Colloquium on Saturday, Nov. 10. Senior Liz Brennan, president of the Judicial Review Board (JRB), along with Andrew Gabany, vice president of the JRB, presented on ethical standards for leaders with interactive examples and discussions. Brennan also used different moral scenarios to push students to consider the implications of their actions, such as the ethics of parking in a handicap designated space. “Always consider the circumstances when making an ethical decision. The situation will never be black and white,” said Brennan. Electroacoustic Barn Dance Returned to UMW

The Department of Music at the University of Mary Washington hosted the second annual Electroacoustic Barn Dance from Thursday, Nov. 8 through Saturday, Nov. 10. The three-day electronic music festival  included the works of more than 70 artists and composers from across the country presented in 13 concerts. Most of the performances were held in UMW’s Pollard Hall and Monroe Hall, with additional performances at The Blarney Stone and 909 Saloon in historic downtown Fredericksburg. The festival began with Concert I at 8 p.m. on Thursday, and continued throughout the weekend, concluding with Concert XIII at 10 p.m. on Saturday. UMW Philharmonic Opens Season with Masterworks Concert

The UMW Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Kevin Bartram, will perform its Masterworks concert on Oct. 20

The University of Mary Washington Philharmonic Orchestra kicked off its 42nd season with its Masterworks concert on Saturday, Oct. 20. The concert was centered on the theme "Star Gazing." The concert features Gustav Holst’s masterpiece “The Planets,” as well as “Earthrise and Return” by Chip Davis of Mannheim Steamroller fame, “A Short Ride in a Fast Machine” by Pulitzer-Prize winning composer John Adams and “Also Sprach Zarathustra” by Richard Strauss, better known as the theme to the Stanley Kubrick film “2001: A Space Odyssey.” The program concluded with John Williams’ “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.” Singers from UMW’s choir and the Chamber Chorale of Fredericksburg performed during the Adams piece. “We are thrilled to open our 42nd season with this ambitious program,” said Director of the Orchestra Kevin Bartram. “These are all great works, and the Philharmonic has been working hard to deliver an outstanding concert. UMW College of Education Hosts Literacy Leaders Symposium

The University of Mary Washington College of Education and Stafford County Public Schools hosted the third annual Literacy Leaders Symposium on Wednesday, Oct. 17. The symposium, “Literacy Leadership: Catalyst for Change,” allowed educators to engage in professional discussions of how literacy teaching and learning are impacting Virginia K-12 students, school divisions and education stakeholders. The symposium included a keynote presentation from William Brozo, professor of literacy at George Mason University. Brozo is the author of numerous articles and books on literacy development for children and young adults, including “Content Literacy for Today’s Adolescents.”  His research focuses on adolescent and content literacy, secondary literacy reform, struggling learners and closing the literacy achievement gap for boys. C-SPAN Campaign Bus Made a Stop at UMW

The University of Mary Washington hosted the C-SPAN Campaign 2012 Bus on Thursday, Sept. 27 on the Fredericksburg campus. The stop was part of a four-day tour to five Virginia universities and colleges to speak to students and community members regarding their thoughts about campaign issues. When the bus first arrived, political analyst Stephen Farnsworth was a guest on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal segment. Farnsworth, who is a UMW political science professor and director of the University’s Center for Media and Leadership Studies, is an expert on the 2012 presidential election cycle as well as Virginia government and politics. U.S. News Rates UMW Among Top Public Universities in South

UMW ranks in the top 10 among public southern universities, according to U.S. News & World Report

U.S. News & World Report has ranked the University of Mary Washington’s undergraduate program sixth among public southern universities in the “Top Public Regional Universities – South” category in its 2013 edition of America’s Best Colleges. The university ranks 16th among all southern universities in the same category. Mary Washington has been ranked in the top 20 among southern universities each year for more than five consecutive years. The listing was announced Sept. 12 in the magazine’s online edition. U.S. News & World Report bases its rankings on peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving. UMW Political Science Professor Receives National Award

Rosalyn Cooperman, associate professor of political science at the University of Mary Washington, has been named a 2012 recipient of the American Political Science Association’s Jack L. Walker Outstanding Article Award.  The award honors a paper published within the last two years that contributes to the discipline’s understanding of political organizations and parties. Cooperman co-wrote “Activists and Conflict Extension in American Party Politics,” originally published in the American Political Science Review in 2010, with Geoffrey Layman of the University of Notre Dame, Thomas Carsey of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, John Green of the University of Akron and Richard Herrera of Arizona State University. Incoming Students Experience Traditions, New and Old, at UMW

A glow of candles welcomed new University of Mary Washington students as they filed into Ball Circle Thursday, Aug. 23. Soon the flames spread from person to person, eventually reaching each candle. Faculty and staff joined nearly 1,000 students for the inaugural Eagle Gathering. The candlelight event was part of the five-day orientation for incoming students. “The light we passed at Eagle Gathering represents the torch of knowledge that can be seen at the center of our institutional seal,” said President Richard V.
