Gari Melchers Home and Studio To Host Talk on Pleasure Gardens
April 9, 2008Gari Melchers Home and Studio will host “Pleasure Gardens: From Cottages to Castles,” an illustrated talk by landscape designer Phillip Watson of Phillip Watson Designs. The presentation will take place on Friday, April 25th at 4 p.m. in the Pavilion.
A regular host on the QVC Shopping Network, Waston’s work has been featured in numerous publications such as Southern Accents, House and Gardens, Horticulture, and The New York Times. A former resident of Fredericksburg, Watson currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia. His talk will highlight images of Fredericksburg gardens as well as some of his estate work in Greenwich, Conn.
Following his presentation, Watson will demonstrate his skill in creating containers using unique plant material that can be displayed all season long. Audience questions are encouraged. The finished products will be given away to one or more of the guests attending.
After the presentation, participants are encouraged to explore Belmont’s restored gardens and wooded trails. Visitors also will be able to view the special spotlight exhibition, “Memorable Madonna: The Art Institute of Chicago’s Mother and Child” in the studio gallery.
The cost, including refreshments and local wine, is $40 for members of Friends of Belmont and $50 for non-members. Register by Monday, April 21 by calling Roxana Varga at (540) 654-1307.
Gari Melchers Home and Studio is a 26-acre estate and former residence of the artist Gari Melchers and his wife Corinne. The property, which is operated by the University of Mary Washington, is both a Virginia Historic Landmark and a National Historic Landmark. Located at 224 Washington St. in Falmouth, Va., a quarter mile west of the intersection of U.S. 1 and U.S. 17, it is open daily with an admission charge.
