Gari Melchers Home and Studio To Present Exhibition Highlights

December 11, 2008

Gari Melchers Home and Studio is hosting two exhibitions beginning Thursday, January 15. “Painting Highlights from the House” will run through Saturday February 28, while the Spotlight Exhibition: “The Unpretentious Garden” will be on display through Wednesday, April 15. Both special exhibitions are included with a reduced admission price, which is half price ($5) for adult and free for students 18 and under through February. All visitors will be admitted free of charge on Wednesdays in January and February. The historic house will not be available for tours during this time period.

While the house is closed for repairs, “Painting Highlights” will highlight many of Gari and Corinne Melchers’ favorite paintings from their personal collection in the studio. This exhibit gives audiences an opportunity to closely inspect pictures that are often difficult to view in the house setting. The scope of the couple’s collection is broad and eclectic, including everything from the old masters to the work of Melchers’ European and American contemporaries.

“The Unpretentious Garden,” painted around 1910, is a sunny, impressionist landscape expressing the happy tranquility of Melchers’ domestic life. The most reproduced image by Melchers, the work depicts Corinne Melchers in the lush backyard of the couple’s home in Holland. On loan from The Telfair Museum of Art, the painting appears at the studio for the first time and is in the company of other examples painted by Melchers during the Dutch interlude of his career.

Gari Melchers Home and Studio is a 28-acre estate and former residence of the artist Gari Melchers and his wife Corinne. The property, which is operated by the University of Mary Washington, is both a Virginia Historic Landmark and a National Historic Landmark. Located at 224 Washington St. in Falmouth, Va., a quarter mile west of the intersection of U.S. 1 and U.S. 17, it is open daily with an admission charge. The museum also serves as the official Stafford County Visitor Center.
