UMW to Cosponsor Sustainability Day, Nov. 7
October 29, 2009The University of Mary Washington and the Stafford County Cooperative Extension Office are cosponsoring a Sustainability Day and Plant Exchange on Saturday, November 7.
Events will be held at the UMW Fredericksburg campus in Ball Circle from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will feature several information sessions and activities that are free and open to the public.
Garden enthusiasts are encouraged to bring plants labeled with a common name and gardening supplies to exchange with fellow community members. The collection of plants for exchange will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the official Plant Exchange at 10 a.m.
A sustainable landscape information session will begin at 11 a.m. Guy Mussey, Stafford County extension agent, will discuss fertilizer application, and Joni Wilson, UMW landscape and grounds director, will talk about guidelines for sustainable landscapes.
In addition, a Downtown Greens clean water presentation, a Rappahannock Solid Waste Management Board composting demonstration and a Friends of the Rappahannock erosion demonstration are scheduled throughout the day.
From noon to 2:30 p.m., the UMW Ecology Club and Residence Life sustainability coordinators invite the public to enjoy events that include a free clothing swap and the opportunity to tie dye a t-shirt. Friends of the Rappahannock rain barrels and Bluebird Society birdhouses will be for sale. The public also may bring used toner cartridges for recycling.
Parking is available in the Chandler Hall lot on College Avenue near Parcell Street. Staff will be available to assist the public with loading and unloading materials.
