What does it mean to subscribe with a news reader?

It's easy to read a few websites for the latest news, but any more than that and it becomes a chore to check them all. Similarly, when a website publishes a new story, there's no automatic way for you as a reader to know about it. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to see all the latest stories from your favorite websites as soon as they are published? That's where subscribing with a news reader comes in.

Most sites with regularly updated content will provide a link to subscribe to the site. These little symbols, and , usually indicate a subsciption link (also called news feeds, RSS feeds, or Atom feeds). Plug that link into a news reader program and you'll get instant access to the latest stories from the site. There are many freely-available news readers to choose from:

  • Some modern browsers like Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2 will automatically display the stories by clicking on a subscription link.
  • Some modern email programs like Gmail and Yahoo! Mail can display the stories along with your normal email.
  • There are also standalone news readers like Feedreader and RSSOwl that give you lots of options on how to sort and display your subscriptions.

The University of Mary Washington provides several different subscriptions to cater to your interests. There's a general news channel with all the latest happenings, channels for cultural activities like lectures, exhibits, and performances, and even a channel for each official sports team. You'll find the complete channel listing below. So go ahead, pick a news reader, plug in your favorite links, and get updated!
